RMC Connect Notes — June 27, 2020

Eric’s Corner

2 Corinthians 12:7–9 “And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, … Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

God uses weakness and suffering to spread the Gospel. Have you been pleading with God to remove pain or suffering from your life? Maybe He is using it to cause us to surrender. Paul and Jesus said yes to pain for God’s purposes. Will you say yes to suffering for the Gospel to go forth and God’s will to be done. Surrender begins with submission that the power of Christ may rest upon us.

1 Peter 1:22 “Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart …”

Obeying God isn’t easy at times. Our thoughts, opinions, and emotions can really cause us to stray from that God given direction. We are particularly called to love each other in the church. That love is to be a burning fire fueled by purity of thought and action towards each other. I pray that despite the chaos of this world we at RMC will strive to obey in love one another.

John 17:20–21 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.”

Christ prayed for you! He prayed that all who would believe would be unified. We are not to let the schemes of the world divide us as a body of believers. However, it does take an active humility on our part to walk by faith, pray for unity, and be the difference in loving others.

1 Peter 1:6-7 “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Various trials have hit the world, our nation, and our city in the start of 2020. Closer to home some of us have had trials regarding our health, our families, and our jobs. Though we don’t enjoy these trials they do have a purpose, our faith. Our faith is being purified and tested more now than usual. May we all pray for each other and our self that our faith would be found pure and offered in praise when Jesus returns.

Romans 15:13 “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Abounding in hope is hard during these times. It is only by the power of the Spirit that such things are possible. Notice that God is the God of hope and he fills us with joy and peace in our faith in our Redeemer, Jesus. Job 19:24-27 specifically talks of our Redeemer returning to reign on this earth. We will be transformed in an instant and see the Son of God for our self. The anticipation of Christ’s return should fuel that hope within us. Our hope in is the God of hope and His Son. Jesus is coming soon!!!

Philippians 4:11 “Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.”

Whatever state … regardless of our conditions, our contentment is in Christ. It does not come naturally to be content, but supernaturally through satisfaction in Jesus. I want to challenge you in two things. In regards to COVID, we can become frustrated and spiral out of control in anger, depression, or apathy. Second, we like normal. It is unlikely that we will return to pre-Covid normal and have to adapt. However, here are two things to focus on in the “state” we find our self in. We can’t allow our circumstance to rob us of contentment. Also, Christ is the source of contentment. If we focus on these two things, contentment will come. Choose contentment. Choose Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Today, all long for peace. They long for peace from this virus. They long for peace financially. They long for peace relationally. Christian, our peace only comes from God. We offer these requests to God for his peace. We will not get peace from our own understanding, but we can receive peace beyond our understanding. That desired peace only originates with God. Be prayerful. Be thankful. Be at peace.

Philippians 3:12-13, “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on… but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

The past… We all have a past, and at times it can really inhibit our spiritual growth. Though we have been forgiven, we walk around stuck in guilt and remorse. Paul, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit reminds us to forget the past. Jesus has paid it all. He goes on to tell us to press into God’s purposes ultimately being with him and Christ. May we all put the past in the past and press on for God’s purposes today.

Philippians 3:8, Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.

It is easy for us to consider these current limitations upon us as a loss. However, we should count all things as loss in comparison to knowing Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We consider the best of this world as garbage compared to him. In our times of actual loss, the Lord will meet us with a supernatural knowledge of him. Keep looking up and the loss will disappear.

2 Corinthians 4:16–18
“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

This past week this passage has really ministered to me, especially with everything I have gone through. It reminds us to not lose heart despite what is happening around us and what may be happening in us. Our mind and eyes need to be fixed on eternal things that God is working out in His perfect timing and perfect will. Don’t lose heart, look up, and remember God’s love for you.

Philippians 2:14-16a
“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault… shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life…”

These stressful times can have a negative or positive effect upon us. In the quote above, may we be encouraged to keep our eyes on eternal things such as heaven and sharing the Gospel. Brothers and sisters in Christ, our conduct can be shining lights in the world or we can spread the darkness of discouragement through complaining and disputing. May we hold fast to the word of life, Jesus, that others may know Him and make Him known.

Philippians 2:5–7 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,…made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant…”

In our past Wednesday night Bible Study, we learned that the example of Jesus Christ should impact us to be servants. It is always hard to serve others, but in crisis it is even harder. We need to keep our eyes on our Savior so that we might be a servant to others.  Look to Jesus during this time, love others with our hands, heart, and words. Keep the mind of Jesus within you.
